Ingredients of Traditional Ven-Pongal

  1. You need of Pongal.
  2. It's 1 cup of Rice.
  3. Prepare 1/2 cup of Slit and dehusked green lentil.
  4. It's 10-12 of Black pepper corns.
  5. Prepare 1 teaspoon of Cumin seeds.
  6. You need 1/4 teaspoon of Aesafoetida.
  7. You need 1 inch of piece of ginger crushed.
  8. You need 2 tablespoons of oil.
  9. Prepare 2 tablespoons of ghee.
  10. It's To taste of Salt.
  11. It's 1/2 teaspoon of Turmeric powder.
  12. You need of Tempering.
  13. It's 1 tablespoon of Ghee.
  14. You need 2 of Dry red chillies.
  15. Prepare Pinch of black pepper and cumin powder.

Traditional Ven-Pongal step by step

  1. Roast for few seconds rice and lentil separately and wash and keep aside..
  2. In a pressure cooker pan, add ghee and oil and add freshly crushed pepper and cumin seeds along with asafoetida and crushed ginger.
  3. Add rice and lentil and fry..
  4. Add turmeric powder, cumin powder and salt and fry for 2 minutes..
  5. Add water and let it come to a boil. Put the lid and let cook till 2 whistles..
  6. Open lid once the cooker cools normally..
  7. Add tempering and serve hot with chutney or sambar or just as it is. It taste delicious any which way..
