Ingredients of Varagu Arisi(kodo Millet) Pongal
- Prepare 1 cup of varagu arisi / barnyard.
- Prepare 1/4 cup of moong dal.
- It's 3 cups of water.
- Prepare 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder.
- It's as per taste of Salt.
- You need 1 teaspoon of jeera coarsely powdered / cumin.
- You need 1 teaspoon of pepper coarsely powdered.
- You need 1/2 inch of ginger finely grated.
- Prepare as needed of Few curryleaves.
- Prepare as needed of Hing / asafoetida.
- Prepare 2-4 tsp of Ghee.
I had little kodo millet sitting in the pantry for quite sometime. Varagu Arisi is also one of the healthy millet. We can substitute varagu arisi for normal rice. So this in this recipe, I have used varagu arisi and made sakkarai Finally garnish with roasted cashews and raisins and switch off the flame.
Varagu Arisi(kodo Millet) Pongal step by step
- Wash and soak Varagu arisi and moong dal for 20 to 30 minutes..
- Drain water from varagu arisi and dal.Transfer it to pressure cooker add water,turmeric powder,salt and pressure cook for 4 whistles.Switch off and allow pressure to release..
- Heat a pan and add ghee.Now add ginger, jeera powder,pepper powder,hing and curry leaves..
- Now add this to cooked varagu arisi and dal mixture.Mix well to combine all ingredients together..
- Serve hot Varagu Arisi Pongal with coconut chutney or any chutney of your choice..
