Usually this payasam is made with chana dal only, but here I had added one chopped banana along with it which gives you a different, awesome taste. Ingredients of Parippu pradhaman / Chana dal payasam

  1. It's 1 cup of chana dal.
  2. You need 2 1/2 cup of water.
  3. You need 400 gm of jaggery.
  4. Prepare 1 1/2 cup of thick coconut milk.
  5. It's 3 cup of thin coconut milk.
  6. Prepare 1/4 tsp of Elaichi(cardamom) powder.
  7. Prepare 1/2 tsp of Roasted jeera(cumin) powder.
  8. You need 1/4 cup of coconut bits.
  9. Prepare 8-10 of Cashew nuts.
  10. Prepare 8-10 of Raisins.
  11. It's 4 tbsp of Ghee.
  12. Prepare to taste of Salt.

Payasam is usually made with vermicelli or rice or rice flakes and is cooked with milk and sweetened with white sugar. Pradhaman is yet another So, this Onam I made Kadala parippu pradhaman or Chana dal pradhaman. I also added one banana to it, which did make the pradhaman taste delicious. If you are new to Indian food - think of payasam or kheer as a soupy desert!

Parippu pradhaman / Chana dal payasam step by step

  1. Wash and drain the chana dal and roast on low flame till you get a nutty aroma.It took almost 10mins for me.then pressure cook it adding 2.5 cups of water and wait for 4whistles.Once pressure releases mash dal a bit If u want u can mash them completely but I like the bite in them..
  2. Melt jaggery by adding water.once melted completely strain them and pour on to the dal.let it cook nicely and become a thick mixture.
  3. Now pour thin coconut milk and wait till it reduces to half the quantity..
  4. Pour thick coconut milk and now tip in elaichi powder and cook for 3mins.Tip in roasted jeera powder and a pinch of salt and cook for 2 more mins..
  5. Heat 3tbsp ghee in a pan and roast cashewnuts and raisins once done remove keep aside.In the same ghee roast coconut bits till golden brown in colour on low flame...
  6. Tip in the fried cashewnuts,raisins and coconuts along with ghee and mix nicely and swicth of the flame..
  7. Now add a tbsp of ghee and serve hot or chilled ac to ua preference..

It is a sweet dish served in a semi liquid form. Parippu Pradhaman is also known as Paasi Paruppu Payasam in Tamilnadu and Moong dal Payasam in other places. It is a traditional dessert (pudding) made in Kerala using yellow lentils, jaggery and coconut milk. This forms part of the sadya during onam, vishu, weddings or birthdays. Though Kadala Parippu Payasam is comparitively new to me, it's one of my favourites.
